Prof. (Dr.) Shiv Kumar Sarin is a distinguished Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist currently serving as Director of the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. With over five decades of clinical experience, he is recognized globally for his pioneering contributions to hepatology, including the development of standard-of-care protocols for variceal bleeding and the classification of gastric varices that bears his name.
Dr. Sarin completed his MBBS (1975) and MD in General Medicine (1978) from the University of Rajasthan, followed by a DM in Gastroenterology from the University of Delhi (1981). He has been awarded fellowships from all major Indian science academies (FNA, FASc, FNASc) and holds memberships in numerous international liver and gastroenterology associations.
His clinical expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of liver diseases, including viral hepatitis (B and C), liver cancer, alcoholic liver disease, acute-on-chronic liver failure, portal hypertension, and gastric varices. He has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet, edited eleven textbooks, and contributed to 17 major treatment guidelines, including five Asian Pacific guidelines.
Since 2008, Dr. Sarin has led the Department of Hepatology at ILBS, a deemed university and Asia's first comprehensive liver institute. He has trained nearly 90 post-doctoral fellows and guided numerous PhD scholars. His accolades include the Padma Bhushan, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, and the WHO Fellowship, among many others. He continues to advance liver regeneration research and public health initiatives such as the Yellow Ribbon campaign for hepatitis B awareness.
